Description:

Rare pair of Civil War period field glasses with carved ivory bodies, eyepieces and focus wheel and brass frame. The field glasses have a large, 2-inch diameter objective lens and are approximately 3 3/4-inches in length. The lens tubes are engraved "G" and "II". The field glasses are not marked but were probably European made. Ivory field glasses are very rare.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The ivory bodies both have an age crack that extends the full length of the tube. The ivory eye-pieces have several hair-line age cracks. The lens are dusty and the brass frame has a mellow age patina. This is a rare and very attractive set of ivory mounted field glasses. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
