Description:

Model 1841 Percussion Rifle manufactured in 1847 by Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont. The rifle has been re-bored to .58 caliber, fitted with a replacement ramrod with iron, trumpet-shaped, head and modified to accept a Model 1842 Socket Bayonet. The 1859 bayonet modifications turned the barrel down in front of the upper barrel band and added an iron bayonet stud on the underside of the barrel. The rifle has the original browned barrel, case-hardened lock and hammer and brass barrel bands, side plate, trigger guard, butt plate and distinctive, oversize, brass patch box. The lock plate is stamped: ROBBINS / KENDALL & / LAWRENCE / U.S." in four lines in front of the hammer and "WINDSOR / 1847" in two vertical lines behind it. What appears to be a three letter final inspection mark is stamped on the left stock flat. The number "8" is stamped on the left side plate. There are no visible markings on the barrel. The Model 1841 "Mississippi" rifle was used in the Mexican War to the 1st Mississippi Rifles led by Jefferson Davis and by the U.S. Mounted Rifle regiment. During the Civil War the Model 1841 Rifle was widely issued by both the Federal and Confederate armies.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle barrel has a thin brown patina. The lock and hammer have the same age patina as the barrel. There is some minor flash pitting on the lock plate. The lock markings are clear. The brass furniture has not been polished and retains a mellow age patina. The rear sight is a period replacement. The stock is in good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The hammer will not hold at half cock. This is a good example of a Mexican War production Model 1841 Rifle with Civil War era alteration to .58 caliber. and modification for a socket bayonet.
