Description:

U.S. naval officer's sword with cast brass archaic eagle head pommel, knuckle bow with relief American eagle and shield and open-work fouled anchor. The sword has a fluted ivory grip. The 28-inch blade has a single fuller and is etched with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in a banner, military trophies and floral designs. The sword was manufactured between 1800 and 1810. An identical sword is picture on page 19 of "SMALL ARMS OF THE SEA SERVICES" by Robert Rankin. The sword is complete with a silver wire saber knot.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The brass hilt is in very fine condition and retains 30% or more of the original gold wash finish. The ivory grip has an attractive patina; wear is limited to some minor chips near the pommel. The blade has a gray patina and there are several minor nicks in the edge; the etched decoration is faint but visible. The sword is missing the scabbard. This is a very good example of a rare, high grade, Naval Officer's sword that pre-dates the War of 1812. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
