Description:

1) U.S. Schnitzer & Kirschbaum Regulation Pattern of 1850 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. The 32 inch double fuller blade is etched with leaf, branch, floral, and patriotic designs on each side, with the makers mark "Schnitzer/ &/ Kirschbaum/ Solingen" etched on the right side, with "IRON PROOF" on the spine. Brass guard with cut-through floral patterns, rear quillion, shield engraved on the butt, and a wire wrapped rayskin grip. Black leather scabbard with engraved brass fittings, floral designs with an open inscription panel on the throat. Blade is good, with the etching legible and mild spotting. Grip is slightly loose, with an aged patina on the brass, minor wear on the skin and a small loose section of wire. Sheath shows some minor cracking and one or two dents on the brass. From the Will Hoffeld Collection. 2) Regulation pattern M1852 Naval Officer's Sword engraved: "Presented by/Officers and Crew/of the/U.S.S. Stewart" on the scabbard throat and etched: "FRANK FERGUSON WEBSTER" in a panel on the reverse of the blade. The sword has a 30-inch fullered blade with spear point etched with fouled anchors, "U.S.N." in banners and floral designs. The regulation gold-washed, cast brass hilt is decorated with "USN" and oak leaves in the guard, a down-turned eagle quillion, dolphin-shaped knuckle bow and pommel cap cast with eagle and stars. The grip has a fish skin cover wrapped with twisted wire. The scabbard has a leather body with brass drag, suspension band and throat. The edge of the drag has a cast sea serpent motif and the suspension bands have cast knots. The throat, band and drag are engraved with oak leaves and anchors. The sword is complete with a bullion sword knot. The sword probably dates from around 1940. Very fine. The blade is in excellent condition and retains all of the original finish. The hilt is excellent and retains about 90% of the gold plated finish. The scabbard has a repaired break between the throat and the lower band. The finish on the brass scabbard furniture has some minor flaking. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
