Fitted with the distinctive Maynard tape primer, the lock is dated "1859" behind the hammer and stamped "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" below the bolster. The tape primer compartment lid is stamped with the Springfield Eagle and Shield motif. Blade front and folding leaf rear sights, with the long range leaf absent. The left side of the barrel is stamped "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks and later production Civil War barrel dated "1863" on top. The buttplate heel is stamped "U.S." above the screw. A pair of cartouches are stamped on the left side of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Fair as cleaned, with a bright gray patina on the metal. The barrel has a somewhat rough texture, along with deeper pitting concentrated at the nipple and some minor dings overall. Lock plate and hammer show some dark spotting. Stock is sanded and refinished, with a chip absent from the left side of the barrel tang, some filled in areas around the lock plate, mild pressure dents, and a slightly oversized butt. Action is very good, including the primer system.
