Description:

This is an excellent example of a scarce and very desirable Luftwaffe marked J.P. Sauer M30 Drilling rifle. The Luftwaffe procured a limited number of these drillings in 1941 for issue to bomber crews stationed in North Africa, as a survival gun in case they were shot down behind enemy lines. These J. P. Sauer and Sohns M30 Drilling have a super high grade commercial blued finish on the barrels along with a color casehardened action, trigger guard, forearm latch, and pistol grip cap. The oil-finished walnut stock has a cheek rest, finely checkered pistol grip and black plastic buttplate with the encircled J. P. Sauer and Sohns "SuS" monogram logo on the face of the buttplate. The right side of the buttstock has the large deeply impressed Luftwaffe Spread Wing Eagle clutching a Nazi Swastika. The oil-finished walnut forearm has finely checkered panels and casehardened furniture decorated with light engraving. The stock and rifle barrel are fitted with sling swivels. The barrel has a matted rib and 100 meter folding rifle sight that raises automatically when the selector on the receiver tang is moved to the rifle barrel. The rifle barrel has an adjustable single set trigger. The receiver has cocking indicator pins for the rifle and shotgun barrels. The receiver, trigger guard and pistol grip cap are decorated with a nicely executed, scroll engraving. The Sauer monogram is engraved on the underside of the receiver ahead of the trigger guard and the trademark is engraved on the bottom of the barrel lug. All of the screw heads are decorated with light engraving. The breech ends of both barrels are marked: "KRUPP-LUFTSTAHL" and the rifle barrel caliber: "9.3X74.R." is engraved in an oval panel on the barrel rib behind the rifle rear sight. The breech ends of both barrels are vertically marked; "J.P. SAUER & SOHN,SUHL" and again on both sides of the receiver. The serial number, "337948" is engraved on the rear of the trigger guard and stamped on the bottom of the rifle barrel; the inside of the forearm latch is numbered "7948". The right side of the rifle barrel chamber is marked with the caliber, "9/3X74R" followed by the "Eagle/N" commercial proof mark. The bottoms of both shotgun barrel chambers are stamped with the gauge, "12/65" followed by the "Eagle/N" proof, with the right side of the rifle barrel stamped 1-42, indicating manufacture in January 1942. The Luftwaffe "Eagle/2" Test Proof is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The large Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika Insignia is stamped prominently on the right side of the stock and the right side of the barrel. The aluminum case has a dark gray/green painted exterior and is fitted with a leather handle and two locking latches. The case interior has wooden dividers with felt padding; with a list of the contents, stenciled on the inside of the lid. The case includes a partial black cardboard box which contain a three piece wooden cleaning rod with brass fittings, several bore brushes, (for both rifle and shotgun), made of both brass and or fiber/cloth, a short German 98k style pull through cleaning chain, and a small black plastic case that contains a plastic oil bottle. The outside of the case is marked "MEWA-DRGM".

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 98% of the original blued finish on the barrels. The complete action and forend attaching iron retain 90% of their color case hardened finish, showing some minor wear or fading around the front and lower edges of the frame and on the upper and lower rear tang behind the trigger guard as well as on the forend attaching iron. All from some light handing or field use. The buttstock shows minor handling marks overall with a couple of light pressure nicks in the checkering on the left side of the pistol grip. The forend also shows some light handling marks in a few places with a couple of light nicks in the checking. The color casehardening on the sides of frame are vivid and distinct. This is a very nice and very scarce Luftwaffe Drilling.
