Description:

Successor to the Third Model Dragoon, the 1860 Army ranks third in total production among Colt's percussion guns and was the chief sidearm of the Union Army during the Civil War. This revolver was manufactured in 1862 and subsequently the barrel was shortened to its current length of 3" with an added blade front sight that partially covers the remaining one-line Colt New York address and the loading lever removed with an unfilled hole. Three screw frame cut for a shoulder stock and marked "COLTS / PATENT" on the left. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene, the partial serial number "8989" and stamped with "Q" and "K" inspection marks. Additional inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel ("Q"), the right side of the barrel ("K"), the top of the backstrap ("C") and trigger guard ("F"). Matching serial number on the iron backstrap, brass trigger guard and barrel, along with a large "E". The wedge is unmarked.

Rating Definition:

Refinished and modified, with the barrel and cylinder exhibiting an artificial smooth brown patina and the backstrap exhibiting a smooth gray patina. The frame and hammer exhibit a mottled silver-gray patina. The brass has a smooth aged patina. The cylinder engraving is clear sharp. The undersized grips are sanded and refinished with some minor scratches, some light nicks on the bottom edge and some minor pressure dents on the butt. The action is good. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
