Description:

This is a beautiful all original Sturm Abteilung (SA) presentation dagger with a Chief Ernst Roehm inscription on the blade. In February 1934, Roehm was authorized to award presentation Daggers to members who joined the SA prior to December 31, 1931 and held continuous membership through February 3, 1934. Roehm was subsequently accused of treason and executed on June 30, 1934. On July 4, 1934, SS Chief Henrich Himmler ordered the Rohm inscription removed from "al"l SA Daggers and the blades ground and re-polished. As a result, surviving examples of SA Honor Daggers with the Roehm inscription are extremely rare. The dagger has a polished, 8 6/8-inch, spear point blade etched with the script "In Herzlicher Freundschaft Ernst Roehm" (In Heartfelt Friendship Ernst Roehm) with the highly desirable makers mark of the J. A. Henckels, Zwillingswerk, Solingen, factory surrounding their makers mark of the "Twins" with the obverse SA motto: "Alles Fur Deutschland" (All For Germany). The SA identification mark of "BO" is stamped on the reverse of the cross guard. The dagger has a silver plated cross guard and pommel with the light brown wooden grip. The obverse side of the grip is inlaid with the enameled pin with the runic "SA" insignia inside below the pommel and the silver Eagle and Swastika national insignia in the center. The scabbard has a brown enameled metal body with silver plated tip and throat and a single suspension ring. The consignor stated that he purchased this dagger from a former 8th Army Air Corps vet in 1999.

Rating Definition:

Exceptional condition, with an original undamaged or sharpened blade, which shows only minor wear/drag marks from being inserted and withdrawn from the scabbard. The balance of the blade has an excellent bright polish with the presentation inscription on both sides being clear and sharp and completely original. The wooden handle has excellent color and shows only minor handling marks on both sides from actual use. The cross-guard, pommel, scabbard tip and throat all retain 95% of their original silver plating showing only some minor scratching on the metal with the very end (or ball) of the scabbard tip has some minor dents from use. The body of the scabbard retain 95% of the brown enameled paint overall with 50% of the protective varnish cost still remaining.
