Description:

This is a very nice example of a late 1930s Prewar Walther PPK with a very nicely done pre-war engraving, deluxe walnut grips, and wooden base on the magazine. The pistol was probably produced as one of the early PPKs with standard markings on the side of the slide and frame with the early 90 degree safety. The unique engraving is very tastefully done in the scroll and vine pattern with a punch dot background. The engraving covers approximately 75% of the exposed surfaces. The custom deluxe walnut one piece grip was made in the same style as the original plastic grip. The checkering pattern on the rear and both sides is the same. The grips and the matching finger rest on the magazine are slightly larger than the plastic. (Writer believes the workmanship to be identical in style to the prewar prototype Walthers one examined.) The magazine has an enlarged wooden base plate that is also made of that same deluxe walnut with a small stippled panel on each side. Clearly, the grips and base plate were all cut from the same piece of wood. The left side of the slide is marked "WALTHER" in a banner and in two lines "Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella Mehlis (Thur) Walthers Patent Cal 7.65 m/m" and "Mod. PPK". On the right side of the chamber area it has a single "Crown N" proof mark with the same proof directly below that on the side of the slide. The side of the magazine is marked with the Walther banner.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The pistol retains nearly 99% of the bright original blue finish. The slide markings, proofs and engraving itself is very sharp and clear. The grips are also excellent condition with beautiful grain pattern and well executed checkering. It has the original matching slide. This PPK is an extremely fine and unique example of pre-war Walther factory workmanship. It is tastefully engraved in an "atypical" non-Germanic style most commonly encountered of these prewar engraved Walthers.
