Description:

The top of the breech block is marked "MODEL / 1873". The heel is marked "U.S.", and "U" on the barrel band. The lock plate is marked with the eagle and shield motif followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". The left side of the barrel is marked "V / P / eagle head / P". The buckhorn rear sight has a "C" (carbine) on the left side of the base and on the left lef of the leaf. Sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the stock wrist. There are no visible stock markings. The carbine has a blued barrel, lock plate, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate with case hardened breech block and barrel tang.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The metal surfaces have strong traces of original blue mixed with a balance between a smooth brown patina and a dark mottled patina. The breech block has a deep arsenal blue with some traces of bright case color in the protected areas on the underside. The upper tang has a mottled gray patina. The stock has bee heavily sanded and is good with some minor dings, dents, scratches and nicks with a few minor gouges. The markings are beginning to fade.
