Description:

This is an example of a rare U.S. Colt Model 1911A1 pistol that was purchased under contract in 1938. This production year of pistol is the most difficult variation of Colt Model 1911A1 pistol to find. There were only 1296 pistols total produced under this contract. The left side of the slide is marked with the standard Colt two-line, two-block address/patent marking with the Rampant Colt in the center of the markings with a single large "P" proof on top of the slide in front of the rear sight and directly above the magazine catch release button. Directly below the magazine catch button is the large Roman letter "H" inspector proof of "Fredrick W. Hauff" the civilian inspector at Colt's. The right side of the frame is marked with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" over "No. 712764" and forward of the pin hole it is marked "M1911A1 U.S. ARMY". The top rear section of the frame is also stamped with the provisional "G" proof indicating Government contract and directly next to that is a small circled "HOL" proof, which is thought to be Major Herbert O'Leary. The pistol retains all the early Model 1911A1 prewar parts, such as the checkered slide stop and thick checkered thumb safety, wide spur Colt hammer, and arched mainspring housing. The all blued barrel is marked with a single "P" proof on the left side of the lug and directly above that it is marked "COLT 45 AUTO". A small "g" is on the underside. It is fitted with the early prewar style walnut all checkered grips with no diamonds.

Rating Definition:

Professionally restored retaining most of the blue finish with areas of original blue carefully blended with the more current blue. Minor edge and high spot wear on the top of the barrel (over the chamber area) and along the main spring housing. The grips are in excellent condition with nice sharp checkered diamonds showing minimal wear or handling. Examples of these are almost non-existent. Writer believes that this pistol would most definitely fill the gap in ones collection nicely.
