Description:

Six shot revolver. Although the serial number on the barrel would indicate that this is a production item, this is the only known specimen. The barrel, cylinder, and loading assembly are from a standard production revolver. The revolving mechanism is unique. Mechanically the revolver can be considered almost bizarre. There is a plate screwed to the rear of the cylinder which engages studs on the revolving plate mounted in the frame. The brass frame has removable side plates on both sides. The flat brass plate on the right side, actually the lock plate, holds the hammer on the outside. The tumbler, to which the hammer is attached, is hollowed out to hold the Belleville mainspring (for those of you who are not familiar with the term, a Belleville spring is like the one on a mousetrap, with spring action in a rotating manner). To remove the right side plate, it is necessary to first remove the cylinder pin to the rear, then the cylinder, and finally the sliding helicoidal rotating mechanism, which is removed through the cylinder space. It is easier to remove the right side plate if the left, circular iron, side plate is first removed and the ratchet wheel which places the tension on the mainspring is released. Tightening the ratchet wheel is the last thing done in reassembly. There is a spring-loaded trap in the buttcap, but its purpose is not obvious. The side hammer and brass frame were used on a few Warner revolving rifles, but this is the only known pistol, and it is unlike the mechanism on any rifle. Pictured on page 180 of the book American Percussion Revolvers.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with traces of gold plating on frame and blue on barrel and cylinder. Grips are fine with most of the original varnish remaining. Mechanically fine.
