Description:

This experimental or prototype revolver is reporting a one of a kind that was originally purchased from descendants of Joseph Rider. The revolver reportedly was manufactured circa 1858 by Joseph Rider. This revolver has been in the William Locke collection and is pictured in the book "The Wm M. Locke Collection" on page 339 and more recently the revolver was in the Dr. S. Karl Spyridon collection. The revolver is also pictured in the book "The Guns of Remington, Historic Firearms Spanning Two Centuries" on page 26. This revolver follows the basic design of Rider's double action revolver, but is mechanically different. The revolver is single action, 28 caliber percussion with six groove rifling and the cylinder has to be manually rotated. The percussion nipples are fully exposed and there are small round stops around the rear of the cylinder with two thin lines between the stops. The frame and two piece grips are brass and the remaining parts are iron. The brass appears to have not been finished and the metal surfaces appear to have been finished blue. There is an overhead cylinder stop which is mounted on the top strap and integral blade front, and frame notch rear sights. Included is a notarized letter stating that the revolver was from the William M. Locke collection and is pictured in Antique Armory's THE WILLIAM M. LOCKE COLLECTION on page 339.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with some minor dings and dents in the barrel, a small area of minor pitting on the left side of the barrel, a few minor dents in the cylinder and some minor oxidation on the hammer. The brass has an untouched, even aged patina with a few minor dings. The mechanics are very good.
