Description:

Marked "H. & C. DANIELS / PATENT / CHESTER / CONN" at the front of the top strap, "EAGLE / C. B. ALLEN / SPRINGFIELD / MASS." at the rear. Flayderman estimates that perhaps as many as fifty of these were made, but surviving serial numbers suggest it could be fewer than that. The Daniel brothers second patent, #677, issued 5 April, 1839, covered this "Revolver". Flayderman mentions the gas seal mechanism on the radial cylinder. There is a protruding mouth on each chamber that fit into the rear of the barrel to effect the seal. A lever under the action moved the cylinder forward into engagement. By this gun, serial number 9, that feature has disappeared and the octagonal cylinder simply revolves. The cylinder has eight chambers and is basically octagonal, with the corners trimmed to make it 16 sided. It is serial number 10 and apparently has been that way all or most of its life. The wear and condition match the action perfectly. The spur of the hammer and rear quarter of the ramrod are broken off and missing. The front sight is also missing. The rifle is equipped with a "V" notch rear sight screw adjustable for elevation. The top strap pivots upwards to allow the cylinder to be removed for cleaning. The rotating latch at the rear has been called a sight by some but it is merely cut this way so the rear sight can be seen.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with gray to brown patina overall, with areas of light pitting and some light dents. The stock has numerous light dents but is solid and still has most of its varnish. Mechanically functional.
