Description:

This rare "Protection" revolver is a Second type; lacking the cylinder scene, "PROTECTION" marking and having a rounded contour at front of frame. Manufactured circa 1857-1858, the identity of maker as yet unknown, although some authorities attribute production to Eli Whitney. About 450 second type revolvers were manufactured. The revolver is nickel plated and fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips. The right grip panel has an inlaid silver escutcheon which is inscribed "LEIUt AUG. J. WARNER / 40th REGT N.Y.V.". Augustus Warner was a member of the 40th Regiment of New York Volunteers "Mozart Regiment" Constitution Guard. He was commissioned at Yonkers, New York as an officer in the N.Y. Volunteer Infantry, 1st Division, 3rd Corps on June 21, 1861. He was promoted to Captain January 1, 1863 and Major April 3, 1863. He was badly wounded in action by a bullet in the leg at Gettysburg and promoted to Lt. Colonel July 7, 1863. He was again wounded at the Battle of Petersburg on June 16, 1864 with shell fragments to the left shoulder. He was discharged from active duty due to his injuries on September 5, 1864. The regiment saw battle at Savage's Station, Fair Oaks, Seven Days' White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and Sailor's Creek. Copies of Warner's military record accompany the revolver.

Rating Definition:

Period retailer finished/inscribed. The revolver retains approximately 75% of the period plated finish with most of the lose due to flaking on the cylinder. There is a small area of flaking on the left barrel flat and around the cylinder on the frame as well as some minor speckled flaking on the right rear of the frame and on the front strap. The exposed areas on the cylinder have a smooth gray patina. The grips are very good with a pleasant hand rubbed patina, some lower edge wear, a few minor chips on the lower edge of the right panel and a few minor handling marks. The action needs work, the cylinder doesn't lock up and it doesn't always cycle when the hammer is cocked. A nice Protection Pocket revolver having belonged to a Civil War Union Officer.
