Description:

This very unusual five shot revolver is generally attributed to James Warner. It is completely different from Warner’s later patents and revolvers. Many of these early percussion revolvers were not marked due to the patent infringement problems with Samuel Colt. This is actually an evasion, with separate motions for cocking and revolving. The hammer is standard with two trigger notches and attached to the "V" shaped mainspring by a stirrup. After the hammer is cocked the trigger performs several actions in sequence. The first tiny segment of the pull moves the locking lug, mounted on a spring on the bottom of the frame, out of engagement with the cylinder. A continued pull rotates a cam on the left side of the trigger against the hand, turning the cylinder. It also releases the cylinder catch which snaps back into locking position. The last segment of the pull pivots the sear, dropping the hammer and firing the gun. The unusual arrangement of parts require three different springs; a flat one for the trigger and sear, a large curved one for the hammer; and a curved coil spring for the hand. The back of the cylinder is milled in a star shape to provide a surface for the hand and catch to work on. The removable side plate on the right side of the frame covers all of the operating parts and is retained by a screw from the left side. The trigger guard is brass. It is not known how many of these revolvers were made. The alphanumeric system by which they were numbered has not been deciphered, but a standard interpretation would indicate a production of a few hundred. There was a groove cut into the cylinder between the nipples to avoid the last part of Colt’s patent. The cylinder is etched with floral scrolls. Note that this is the larger 34 caliber revolver with the five shot instead of six shot cylinder and the barrel rifled with seven grooves.

Rating Definition:

Good with a gray patina overall with scattered light pitting. Grips very good with the exception of a short crack at the top of the right panel and a small chip missing at the toe on the same side. Mechanically very good.
