Description:

This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut between 1836 and 1844. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, buttcap, barrel band and trigger guard were once "bright". The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened, with blue trigger and frizzen spring. The lock is marked "U.S. / R.JOHNSON / MIDDN CONN / 1838" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks are stamped on the left rear of the barrel. The left stock flat is marked with two oval cartouches. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War.

Rating Definition:

Refinished. The pistol has a bright gray patina mixed with an area of cold blue near breech, which writer believes is there to cover up a repair. There is some minor pitting with extensive pitting on the trigger guard, butt, side plate and backstrap. The reoiled stock is cracked, otherwise stock is good with some scattered minor dings and scratches, along with legible cartouches. Mechanically fine.
