Description:

This is an example of a Roper revolving shotgun that was produced at Amherst, Massachusetts from 1867 to 1868 by the Roper Repeating Rifle Company. The serial number is marked on the barrel under the forearm. This shotgun used special steel cartridges. The four shot carriers (consisting of a series of fins) are enclosed within a large round housing with a hinged loading gate on top. The hammer pulled the sliding breechblock to the rear, removing the fired case from the barrel, then revolving the cloverleaf carrier; when the trigger was pulled, pushed the next cartridge into the barrel and firing it. The barrel was blue. Frame, trigger guard, and housing are casehardened. German silver blade front sight and manufactured without a rear sight. Smooth forearm with pewter forend cap and straight grip stock with a steel shotgun butt. The dust cover is missing.

Rating Definition:

Very good as incomplete. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brownish/grey patina. There is strong original vivid case colors on the front of the receiver under the forearm. The wood is very good with some scattered minor dings and dents. The incomplete action (missing top "trap door") needs work, it does not always cycle properly.
