Description:

The rifled barrel features fixed sights and is marked "J (illegible) Marckley" on the top flat. The original flintlock lock plate has been converted to percussion with holes filled and is marked "BRAZIER", with a light scroll pattern on the hammer. Writer believes this to be Jacob Markley of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (circa 1756). Refer to page 199 of American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers.) Full length tiger stripe maple stock with single barrel wedge and single trigger. Brass forend cap, patch box, trigger guard, crescent buttplate and ramrod channels. The cheekpiece has a brass star burst inlay. Nice early pattern wide butt.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has a smooth pleasant brown patina, with a smooth dark patina on the lock plate. The brass has a mellow aged patina. The stock is fine on the rear half with the exception of some missing chips and a repair on the lengthened refinished, replaced forearm, a few hairline cracks near the lock plate and a few minor pressure dents. The action is fine. Still, a very solid pre-Revolutionary War Kentucky rifle!
