Description:

This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut between 1836 and 1844. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, buttcap, barrel band and trigger guard were once "bright". The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked "U.S. / R.JOHNSON / MIDDN CONN / 1842" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks are stamped on the left rear of the barrel. The left stock flat is marked with two oval cartouches. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War. Original they had arsenal bright finished barrels, but this example has the identical brown finish that was on the Johnson contract U.S. Model 1817 flintlock rifle. Possibly unique.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as possibly arsenal refinished. The barrel has approximately 70% of the brown finish with some light spotting. The remaining surfaces have a mixture of smooth dark patina and gray patina. The stock is excellent with some scattered minor dings and scratches. The cartouches are clear and crisp. Mechanically fine.
