Description:

Springfield Model 1840 Flintlock Musket with 1841 dated lock plate and 1842 dated barrel. The .69 caliber, Model 1840 smoothbore musket was the last flintlock musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory. The musket has a 42 inch round barrel with bayonet lug on the bottom. The barrel is secured by three barrel bands. The lock features a detachable brass pan and a hammer with circular opening in the center. The barrel and furniture are finished "National Armory Bright". The musket is fitted with an iron trumpet head ramrod. The stock is black walnut with an oil finish. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1841" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and has the eagle and shield over "US" below the flash pan. The left side of the barrel is stamped with Springfield "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks. Two oval final inspection marks are stamped on the left stock flat. Virtually all Model 1840 muskets were converted to percussion and most saw subsequent service during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The musket barrel has a 'salt and pepper' finish with light pitting. There is light to moderate flash pitting on the top of the barrel above the vent and on the tang. The barrel markings are light, but fully legible. The lock plate, hammer, and frizzen have a smooth dark patina with sharp markings. The buttplate has a dark patina with moderate pitting. The stock is in very good overall condition and shows moderate service wear. The inspection marks on the left stock flat are visible, but not legible. The musket appears to have been expertly reconverted to the original flintlock configuration.
