Description:

This is a unique example of a U.S. Model 1817 musket that has been converted to percussion and was manufactured by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer produced approximately 13,000 of these muskets and many were converted to percussion. The center of the lock plate is marked with a large "US / H. DERINGER / PHILADA". The hammer is a high variant similar (or quite possibly) to a Model 1842. The top left side of the barrel is marked "P" and the barrel tang is undated. Blade front and folding leaf rear sights, three barrel bands, patch box and replacement iron ramrod with swollen head. The right side of the forearm directly behind the rear barrel band is stamped with the number "18". The inside of the patch box is stamped "188" and "IIIIAXXX".

Rating Definition:

Fine as converted to percussion. Much of the original brown finish remains on the barrel with overall scattered moderate oxidation and minor pitting on the bolster. The trigger guard and tang show overall moderate oxidation, with lighter oxidation on the patch box lid and buttplate. The hammer and lock were arsenal finished in blue with approximately 50% thin finish remaining. The stock is about good with a repaired crack on the top of the wrist with a small piece missing at the rear of the lock plate, there is a moderate sized piece missing next to the patch box lid hinge, a few minor gouges and small pieces missing along the upper edge along the barrel and overall minor dents, dings and nicks. The lock marking is clear. The action is fine.
