Description:

The saber has a regulation pattern, 32-inch, single fuller, blade. The blade is acid-etched with a central "US" on one side and the eagle and shield motif on the other surrounded by scroll-work and military trophies. The reverse ricasso is etched with the "EA/ARMSTRONG/MFG CO/CHICAGO" maker's mark.. The non-regulation brass hilt has a black, leather covered, grip wrapped with two strands of twisted brass wire. The sides of the brass pommel cap are decorated with cast wreaths of oak acanthus leaves. The three branch brass guard has a central rib. The lower portions of the guard are decorated with cast acanthus leaves. The saber is complete with a regulation pattern M1902 nickel-plated scabbard with two suspension rings. "Lt. L. B. Wyant/ USV-Cavalry" is inscribed on the side of the scabbard. The saber is accompanied by Lt. Wyant's service records. The records show that Lawrence Byron Wyant was a resident of Bellevue, Ohio who received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1916. At the outbreak of WWI, Wyant applied for an appointment as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Wyant was commissioned, assigned to the 13th Cavalry and promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Included with the saber are copies of Lt. Wyant's application for a commission, letters of reference, physical and "Report of Preliminary Training" from the 4th Provisional Officer's Battalion at Fort Leaven worth, Kansas.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade retains most of the frosted finish on the engraved surfaces with some minor patches of age discoloration near the tip. The acid-etched engraving is crisp. The brass guard is bright, the black leather grip wrap is 100% intact. The scabbard is in fine condition with some scattered age discoloration and minor flaking. The scabbard inscription is crisp. This is a fine example of a non-regulation M1902 Officer's Saber with inscribed scabbard.
