Description:

Also known as the Model 1843 or Navy Box Lock Model 1843 manufactured by N.P. Ames of Springfield Massachusetts and Henry Derringer of Philadelphia circa 1842 to 1847. Ames manufactured about 2,000 of these pistols. The pistol has a bright barrel and swivel type steel ram rod with a button shaped head, casehardened lock plate and hammer and brass trigger guard, barrel band and butt cap. The barrel is faintly marked "1843 / RP /P" and there are no sights. The lock is marked "USN / 1844" vertically at the rear and "N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS." below the hammer and fits flush to the stock. The stock is smooth one piece walnut with no visible cartouches or inspection markings.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has been cleaned at one time and has some minor flash pitting. The hammer and lock plate have a smooth dark patina with some sporadic minor pitting. The brass has a polished appearance. A repair has been made near the lock plate, otherwise the stock is good with some minor dings, scratches and a hairline crack near the lock plate screw. Mechanically fine.
