Description:

This lot consists of the original patent papers award William H. Elliot for an improvement in a repeating pistol that was designed to fire a series of stationary barrels. Dated May 29, 1860, the patent granted to Elliot allowed Remington to venture into the derringer market. The patent resulted in the production of "Elliot's Pocket Repeater", or Zig-Zag Derringer. This six shot .22 caliber derringer was seen as a competitor to Sharp's .22 caliber 4-shot pocket pistol. After producing around 1,000 of these Elliot designed derringers circa 1861/62, the production demands of the Civil War forced Remington to cease production. The patent papers consists of 2 U.S. Patent Office legal documents granting W. Elliott a patent for an improvement in repeating fire arm. Included is a diagram of the derringer. The remaining 5 pages are hand written and explain how the derringer operates.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with most of the minor wear and limited paper loss contained to the 2 Patent Office legal documents and derringer diagram. Overall there is some light soiling and the hand writing is clear and legible.
