Description:

Scarce and very desirable Luftwaffe marked J.P. Sauer Drilling. The Luftwaffe procured a limited number of these Drillings in 1941 for issue to bomber crews stationed in North Africa. The drilling is complete with the aluminum storage case, rarely seen "Drilling M.30" manual dated "Juni 1941", factory target serial numbered to the gun, cleaning equipment and belt buckle. Also included with the group is the original capture paper issued to S/SGT C. C. Moorland on April 23, 1945. The commercial grade M30 Drilling has a blued barrel and color casehardened forearm latch, receiver, trigger guard and butt cap. The oil-finished walnut stock has a cheek rest, finely checkered pistol grip and black plastic buttplate with embossed with horizontal ribs and the encircled Sauer "SuS" monogram. The oil-finished walnut forearm has finely checkered panels and case-hardened furniture decorated with light engraving. The stock and rifle barrel are fitted with sling swivels. The barrel has a matted rib and 100 meter folding rifle sight that raises automatically when the selector on the receiver tang is moved to the rifle barrel. The rifle barrel has an adjustable single set trigger. The receiver has cocking indicator pins for the rifle and shotgun barrels. The receiver, trigger guard and butt cap are decorated with simple, well executed, scroll engraving. The Sauer monogram is engraved on the underside of the receiver ahead of the trigger guard and the trademark is engraved on the bottom of the barrel lug. All of the screw heads are decorated with light engraving. The sides of both barrels are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFTSTAHL" and the rifle barrel caliber: "9,3X74.R." is engraved in an oval panel on the barrel rib behind the rifle rear sight. "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" is marked vertically on the breech end of both shotgun barrels and on both sides of the receiver. The serial number, "337010" is engraved on the rear of the trigger guard and stamped on the bottom of the rifle barrel; the inside of the forearm latch is numbered "010". The left side of the rifle barrel chamber is marked with the caliber, "9,3X74R" followed by the "Eagle/N" commercial proof mark. The bottoms of both shotgun barrel chambers are stamped with the gauge, "12/65" followed by the "Eagle/N" proof. The Luftwaffe "Stick Eagle/2" Test Proof is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika insignia is stamped prominently on the right side of the stock and the right side of the barrel. The aluminum case is painted black green and fitted with a leather handle. The top of the case is stenciled: "Drilling M30/mit Munition.u.Zubehor/ce" in three lines. The case interior has wooden dividers with felt padding; a list of the contents is stenciled on the inside of the lid. A black cardboard box contains the cleaning equipment. The box contains: (1) three piece wooden cleaning rod with brass fittings, (2) detachable wooden cleaning rod handle, (3) glass oil bottle(4) steel rifle bore brush, (5) brass rifle cleaning jag, (6) fiber rifle bore brush, (7) rifle bore swab, (8) wire shotgun bore brush, (9) fiber cotton bore brush, and (10) shotgun bore swab. The paper test target is marked with the serial number of the gun, dated "AG 12 1941" and shows the shot patterns for both barrels. The rig lacks only the ammunition originally issued with the case.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The drilling retains 98% of the original blue on the barrel and 95% of the casehardened finish on the receiver. The excellent stock and forearm show only very minor storage wear. All of the markings on the barrel, receiver and stock are crisp and sharp. The case is in excellent condition and retains close to 95% of the original painted finish with minor storage scratches on the edges of the lid and sides of the case body. (This is highly unusual as most cases lack paint.) The russet leather handle shows minor tearing and stitching loss. The case interior is excellent. The manual, test target and capture paper are in excellent condition. The box for the cleaning equipment has small tears and crush marks on either end of the lid but is in good condition overall. The cleaning equipment is in excellent condition. This is one of the finest examples of a scarce Luftwaffe Survival Drilling that has been offered for sale by the Rock Island Auction Company.
