British Percussion, Two-Band, Short Rifle

British percussion two-band rifle made by London gunsmith Edward Reilly. The rifle has a .577 caliber, three-groove, 33-inch barrel with two barrel bands and has the same general configuration as the British Pattern 1858 Short Rifle except this rifle lacks a lug for a saber bayonet. In addition, the rifle has a target spirit level fitted to the stock behind the barrel tang. The rifle has a standard Enfield pattern tangent rear sight graduated to 1100 yards and a standard lug-mounted steel front sight blade. The rifle has screw-fastened barrel bands, a straight shank steel ramrod with knurled head and a brass forearm tip, trigger guard and butt plate. The stock is oil-finished European walnut. The barrel is blued with the barrel bands, hammer and lock plate having a casehardened finish. The lock plate is inscribed: "REILLY./NEW OXFORD STREET/LONDON" in three lines. There are no British proof marks on the barrel or military property markings on the lock, barrel or stock. The rifle is complete with a brass and leather snap cap, a brass tipped muzzle stopper and a Confederate style canvas and leather sling. Edward M. Reilly (1850-1898) was a London gunsmith who specialized in the manufacture of percussion pistols. This rifle appears to be a target or volunteer rifle manufactured for the English market. There is no indication the rifle was made for export to the United States during the Civil War or saw military service either in Great Britain or America.,

ConditionVery fine. The rifle retains 90% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish on the barrel and lock. The casehardened barrel bands have a silver patina. There is minor Flash pitting on the percussion nipple and bolster. The stock has been lightly sanded and reoiled and shows minimal handling wear. The Confederate style leather sling appears to be original but may be an excellent reproduction. This is a very attractive example of a target P58 style Short Rifle.
