Description:

Black felt slouch hat with officer's hat cords and insignia. This style of hat was popular with Federal and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and was also worn with Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) uniforms during the years following the war. The light weight black felt hat as a narrow, two-inch, unbordered brim. The interior has a lightweight, brown leather sweatband and no lining. The hat has a cast brass wreath and the letter "G" pinned to the front. The insignia appears to be post-Civil War GAR insignia. The hat has two officer's style hat cords; one is black and gold with bullion 'acorns' and trim. The other hat cord is gold cloth with bullion acorns. A note from the consigner states that the hat has been in one collection for the last 50 years.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The lightweight black felt is slightly faded and free from insect damage. The leather sweat band is in good condition with scattered stains and wrinkles. The hat cords and insignia are tarnished but remain in good condition. This is a very good example of a hat that could have been worn by a Federal officer during the Civil War or a GAR member during the late 19th Century.
