Description:

Fewer than 100 of these very rare, .31 caliber, double trigger Belt Model revolvers were manufactured by the Springfield Arms Company of Springfield, Massachusetts in circa 1851. This is another misunderstood revolver. They were designed by James Warner to evade Samuel Colt's patent and thus could be made after the famous trial of 1851. After the hammer is cocked, the cylinder is revolved by pulling the forward trigger, thus evading Colt's claim on revolving the cylinder by cocking the hammer. Releasing the front trigger causes the cylinder to lock, again evading Colt's claim on the same action by the hammer. The groove around the cylinder avoids the claim of a block between the nipples, the third and final of Colt's patent claims. The revolver had a blued and casehardened finish with two piece varnished walnut grips. The serial number is marked on the right side of the plate under the grips and stamped into the inside of the left grip panel. The cylinder is etched with a floral scroll motif. A very scarce, pre-Civil War belt revolver.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces has a mottled gray patina with some small areas of minor pitting on the barrel and cylinder. The cylinder etching is clearly visible. The grips are fine with most of the varnish, a moderate chip on the right heel, a few minor gouges on the bottoms and a few minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
