This is an example of a Second Type Cochran Revolving Turret rifle that was manufactured by C.B. Allen of Springfield, Massachusetts in the late 1830s. The rifle has a nine-shot, .40 caliber, turret, and 31-inch full octagon barrel with under-rib and two ramrod thimbles. The rifle has a hickory ramrod. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed, German silver front sight blade and a sporting type rear sight. The frame has a rectangular top strap with loading latch/rear sight. The hammer serves as a trigger guard. The stock is oil finished walnut with a German silver buttplate. The top strap is roll-stamped: "COCHRAN'S/MANY/CHAMBERED/&/NON-RECOIL/RIFLE" behind the top strap hinge and is stamped with an eagle over "C.B. ALLEN/SPRINGFIELD/MASS." at the rear of the top strap. "AAB" is stamped in bold letters on the lower left barrel flat near the fame. The significance of this marking is not known. The serial number, "141" is stamped on the left side of the barrel near the frame, on the inside of the top strap and top strap latch and on the top of the turret. C.B. Allen manufactured approximately 125 Second Type Cochran Turret Rifles in the 30-155 serial number range.

Very good. The barrel has a smooth, dark brown, patina. The edges of the barrel are sharp. The frame, turret and hammer have a mottled, dark gray patina with scattered light pitting and patches of age discoloration. The underside of the turret has light to moderate flash pitting and the top has light flash pitting with some minor dents. The markings on the top-strap are deep and clear. All of the visible serial numbers match and are fully legible. The stock is in very good condition; it retains most of the original varnish and shows light-moderate handling wear. The German silver buttplate and upper receiver are in very good condition. This is a solid original example of a rare Second Type Cochran Patent Revolving Turret rifle in very good condition.
