Description:

This odd attempt to produce a repeating firearm never gained popularity in the U.S. The system was used in the percussion and metallic eras of rifles and handguns. Several manufactures made these repeating rifles. This particular rifle was manufactured by Nicanor Kendall of Windsor, Vt. This rifle features a heavy 20 inch octagon barrel with a fixed small brass blade front and notch rear sights. The top barrel flat is marked "N. KENDALL / WINDSOR VT. / PATENT" between the rear sight and breech and the serial number is stamped on the bottom of the frame and top of the buttplate tang. The rifle has an underhammer action with a 5 round iron bullet chamber. The chamber is manually operated by first cocking the hammer and then depressing a lever on top of the frame. Mounted with a smooth maple straight grip stock with a brass trigger guard and crescent buttplate with a 5 1/4" toe extension, and has a period hand painted vignette of a running deer on the right side. There is a 7/16" plug screw in the center of the buttplate that when removed exposes a trap for spare parts. Kendall was more prolific in the making of handguns and rifles and reportedly made only a little more than 100 of these "repeaters".

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina with some light surface oxidation on the barrel and some light pitting on the frame, and some moderate pitting on the chamber bar. The brass has a dark aged patina. The stock is good as artificially grained with a small fill repair on the left side where it appears there was a small plaque at one time, a small crack at the upper tang and overall minor dents, dings and scratches. Approximately 75% of the period hand grained paint (true folk art!) and almost all of the painted scene remain. The barrel marking is clear. The action is very fine.
