Description:

While this is unmarked, the manufacturing characteristics of this rifle are such that indicate that it was made in the Connecticut River Valley and probably by Nicanor Kendall, David Hilliard, or someone else in the Windsor, Vermont area. The large bend at the rear of the trigger guard is typical of Hilliard’s trigger guards. The trigger guard, buttplate and toeplate are brass. All other parts are iron except the oval German silver plate set at an angle in the tiny cheekpiece. The revolving mechanism was built on the system patented by James Miller in 1829. The large (2 3/8 inches in diameter) seven shot cylinder was revolved by hand. The latch is at the bottom of the barrel lug and operates in notches on the front of the cylinder. The barrel is rifled with seven grooves. The hammer is on top of the wrist, offset slightly to the right to allow sighting. The rear sight is a fixed V-notch and the front is a silver blade set directly into the barrel. The loading lever is interesting. It is mounted on the corner between the left flat and the lower left flat of the barrel. It was placed there because that was the only place it would line up with a chamber. The plunger is 4 3/16 inches long and rides in a pipe about 3/4 inches long. It is pinned to the handle which has a slot in its center and is also pinned to a 1 3/4" swivel on the barrel. This is almost identical to the loading assembly found on the Colt Paterson revolving long arms. The front quarter of the loading lever is missing and from the appearance has been that way for a long time. There is a large sling swivel mounted on the bottom of the stock to the rear of the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Good with even brown patina overall. There are a few dents in the brass toe plate and cylinder. Bore is very dark. Stock is solid. Mechanically fine.
