Description:

This unusual underhammer rifle was manufactured by C.B. Allen for H & C Daniels of Chester, Connecticut. The top of the receiver is equipped with a hinged door similar to a Cochran with a removable steel chamber with a percussion nipple. The latch for the door also services as an additional rear sight. The top of the door is marked "H & C DANIELS / PATENT / CHESTER / CONN" at the breech and eagle over "C. B. ALLEN" in the center. There is a dovetailed blade front sight and an elevation adjustable sight mounted on the barrel. There is a sliding hammer safety, sling swivels mounted on the rear ramrod pipe and rear of the lower tang, wooden cleaning rod and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron forend, brass collar at the front of the receiver, brass crescent buttplate and a silver 2" x 5/8" plate set in the stock on the top of the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces are mostly a brown patina with some small areas of scattered minor pitting and spotting, heaviest on the receiver, door and trigger guard. The brass has a dark aged patina. The wood is good overall with a minor crack running the length on the forearm on the underside. There is a minor repair on the underside of the stock and there is a brass pin through the stock in the same area. The wood has been freshened some time ago and there are overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The forearm remains solid. The markings are readable. The mechanics are fine. A rare and unusual piece. Writer cannot recall ever seeing another example of this unique Allen Produced Rifle.
