Description:

Manufactured by the Springfield Arms Company, this James Warner patented revolving carbine has an almost identical cylinder found on the Wesson & Leavitt dragoon percussion revolver and revolving carbine. The rear of the cylinder, however, does not have the Wesson & Leavitt gear and is revolved on the Warner system by use of a lever in a deep star cut groove at rear of cylinder wall. The loading lever is a Warner type with plunger mounted at an angle. Iron unmarked top strap, with the iron frame marked WARNER'S PATENT / JAN. 1851" on the right side. Both sides of the frame are engraved with a political/military motif. Mounted on a straight grip stock with the correct cheekpiece and steel carbine style buttplate. Although serial numbers on existing specimens indicate that almost 250 were made, very few are known.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The carbine has a balance between a smooth gray patina and a smooth dark patina. There is some minor pitting concentrated on the barrel, along with minor flash pitting. The right side of the stock has a wide cut, otherwise the stock is very good with some chipping and a few cracks along the grain near the underside and some minor dings and scratches overall. The buttplate is slightly loose. The markings are weak, but legible. Mechanically needs work, action is locked in the decoked position.
