Description:

Henry lever-action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1865. The rifle has a octagon barrel with integral 18-round magazine. The barrel has a German silver front sight blade and a replacement, fixed, buck-horn rear sight. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and late pattern brass buttplate with pointed heel. The buttplate has a hinged cleaning rod trap. The hammer and loading lever have a case-hardened finish. A special order sling swivel is located on the left side of the walnut stock and a factory sling loop is screwed to the left side of the barrel. The distinctive 'Henry bump' is visible below the sling swivel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the late, larger format, two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT.OCT.16.1860/MANFACT'D. BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight dovetail. An "H" factory inspection mark is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The serial number, "10673." is stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight dovetail and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style buttplate cap screws are correctly not stamped with the rifle serial number. Although very limited numbers of Henry Rifles were purchased by the Ordnance Department during the Civil War, experts believe that most Henry manufactured thru early 1865 were privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted a reliable, magazine repeating rifle. Henry Rifles were especially popular with Federal soldiers in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments and were found in significant numbers in many western regiments by the end of the Civil War. Many of the Civil War Era Henry Rifles were subsequently used in the frontier west.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has an attractive, plum-brown patina with traces of the original blue finish in protected areas. The edges are sharp and the factory legend and serial number are crisp. The brass receiver has moderate handling wear. There are some small dents on the top of the receiver and some minor pry-marks on the upper edges of the side-plates. The side plate fit is very good. The sides and bottom of the receiver have numerous faint handling marks. The brass receiver and buttplate have a mottled patina. The casehardened hammer and loading lever have a gray brown patina. The reoiled stock is in fine condition with minimal handling wear. Mechanically functions well, but lever is slightly loose and does not stay up with aid of the catch.
