Description:

This is one of 892 First Type carbines manufactured by Edward Lindner, Manchester, New Hampshire, probably at Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. The carbine is loaded by turning a rotating collar locking device on the barrel 180 degrees to the left. The breechblock is then pushed upward by a spring. This carbine has the correct First Type breechblock patent date marking ("EDWARD LINDER'S / PATENT / MARCH 29, 1859"), with the correct unmarked lock plate and trigger guard without provisions for a sling ring. It features a two leaf rear sight behind the breechblock, square profile buttplate and a sling ring mounted on the left side opposite the lock. Of the 892 First Type carbines produced, 391 where delivered to the Michigan Cavalry circa November 1861 and 501 where delivered to the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry in late 1863.

Rating Definition:

Good. Overall the metal surfaces have a light mottled gray patina with signs of being cleaned at one time and some minor pitting mostly contained around the rear sight and buttplate. There are a few minor gouges on the forearm and a minor crack near the lock plate screw, otherwise the stock is good with some minor dings and scratches. The breechblock marking is clear. Mechanically fine.
