Manufactured by Richardson & Overman with a total quantity roughly 17,700. Dovetail blade front sight and two-leaf folding rear sight on the barrel. It features the standard model production lock plate marking: "GALLAGER/ PATENTED JULY 17th 1860" and "MANUFACTD BY / RICHARDSON & OVERMAN / PHILADA" over the serial number. Smooth straight grip stock with patch box and iron buttplate marked "175". Saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side of the stock with no visible cartouches. The Gallager saw extensive service during the Civil War including cavalry units from Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. Many were sold after the Civil War by various surplus dealers/retailers.

Rating Definition:

Period retailer refinished. The barrel has traces of faded blue finish around both sights with a smooth gray patina overall with some minor pitting and some dark spotting. The action, patch box and buttplate retain approximately 30% plus of the high polish blue strongest in the protected areas. There are 8 minor circular (compass applied) marks (about the size of an American quarter), otherwise the stock is fine with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanincally fine.
