Description:

Joslyn carbines were widely issued to Federal cavalry regiments. This carbine has a blued barrel, casehardened lock plate, hammer and breechblock and brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate. A folding, three-leaf rear sight is fitted on the barrel and a sling bar and ring is attached to the left stock flat. The top of the breechblock is marked with the standard three line Joslyn 1861 and 1862 patent dates over the serial number. The lock plate is marked "JOSLYN FIREARMS CO / STONINGTON / CONN." ahead of the hammer. Two script ordnance inspection cartouches are stamped on the left stock flat above the sling bar and "TKL" on the rear sight and barrel at the breech.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains approximately 40% plus faded original blue finish (strongest at the breech) with the balance a smooth gray patina. The brass has a mellow aged patina. The lock plate, breechblock, upper tang, hammer and saddle ring bar plate retain traces of bright original case colors with the balance a crisp silver gray. The stock is very fine with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. This is an attractive fine original First Model Joslyn Civil War carbine.
