Description:

This is an example of a First Model Merrill Carbine with brass barrel band, buttplate, trigger guard and patch box. The lock plate has a beveled edge and is marked with the serial number vertically at the rear (the "4" has been restamped). "J.H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY.1858. / APL.9 MAY 21-28-61" is marked on the lock plate below the bolster. Merrill's name and patent dates are marked on top of the breech latch. The serial number is also present on the breech latch. The carbine was fitted with three-leaf folding rear sight that serves as a latch for the breech lever. A sling bar with ring is mounted on the left side of the stock flat. The forend tip has a sharp tapered contour.

Rating Definition:

Good. The carbine has a smooth gray-brown patina with a smooth dark patina on the lock plate and hammer and a mellow aged patina on the brass components. The wrist is cracked, otherwise the revarnished stock is good with a few minor gouges and some minor dings and scratches. The markings are legible. Mechanically fine.
