Description:

Manufactured circa late 1850s to the early 1860s with this revolver converted to fire the .38 rimfire cartridges as well as 36 percussion, both cylinders come with the revolver. The revolver appears to be a special order from the factory. The hammer is adapted to fire both percussion and rimfire cartridges. The percussion cylinder is stamped with a "0" on the rear and there is a "3" and "7" between the nipple recesses. The front face of the cylinder is marked with the number "15", as is the bottom barrel flat just ahead of the serial number. The ram rod is marked with a "0" behind the serial number. The percussion cylinder is roll engraved with a faint, but visible eagle/shield/lion scenes. The revolver is finished in nickel with a silver plated brass trigger guard, has small brass post front sight and frame notch rear sight, and is fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips. Complete with a period brown leather flap holster. According to a previous seller, this revolver reportedly was found in western North Carolina and from all indications was probably a special order from the factory and belonged to a Confederate officer during the Civil War. No facts had been verified.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period retailer plated. The revolver retains approximately 50% of the nickel finish with the balance having a smooth mottled gray patina. Approximately 90% of the original silver plating remains on the trigger guard, the exposed areas have an aged patina. The cartridge cylinder retains approximately 60% original nickel finish with a smooth brownish gray patina on the exposed areas. The grips are good retaining much of the original varnish, showing some wear on the lower edges, several dents on the bottoms (mostly on the right side and extends to the butt) and overall a few minor dings and dents. Except noted above, the markings are clear. The action is excellent. The holster is good with some heavy wear on the flap, age cracking and tight stitching. A very interesting Whitney percussion/cartridge revolver.
