Description:

Civil War era physician's surgical kit manufactured by Sharp & Smith of Chicago, Illinois. The kit consists of a 15 3/4 inch by 4 1/4 inch mahogany case with two compartments. The case has an oval brass inlay on the lid and is reinforced with brass strips. The case interior is lined with purple velvet and has a velvet-lined partition to separate the upper and lower portions of the case. The bottom of the partition has an oval, gold and black label with the Sharp & Smith address. The upper compartment contains a large saw with checkered ebony handle and a pair of surgical pliers. The lower portion of the case has an open compartment with a cloth tourniquet, a covered compartment that contains surgical thread and five surgical tools including three scalpels and two other tools. The scalpels are nickel-plated with checkered ebony handles. The kit appears to contain all of the original surgical equipment.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The case exterior is in excellent condition with light handling wear. The velvet lining on the case bottom and on the case partition has sun-faded to olive green. The lining in the upper compartment retains the original purple color. The tools are in fine condition. The nickel-plating on the blades has some minor age spotting but the blades and handles are in generally fine condition. This is a very fine and complete example of a Civil War Era physician's surgical kit.
