Description:

Highly prized by collectors for its limited production and significance as the first Colt revolver manufactured specifically for a metallic cartridge, the Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver is the transition model between the Colt cartridge conversions and solid frame Single Action Army revolver. Approximately 7,000 Model 1871-72 Revolvers were manufactured in 1872 and 1873. The barrel has the distinctive integral rear sight and one line " - ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA" marking on top of the barrel. The left side of the frame is stamped with the two line "1871/1872" patent date. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas/Mexico naval engagement scene, and the serial number "5012". The matching serial number is also marked on the barrel, frame, arbor pin trigger guard and backstrap. The assembly number "339" is stamped on the back of the loading gate. The left rear trigger guard bow is stamped with a "W". Nickel plated grip strap and trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Approximately 20% original nickel plated finish remains on the barrel, mostly in sheltered areas, the balance has flaked and is now a mottled gray/dark patina, exhibiting light pitting near the muzzle and around the breech with some more overall handling marks, scratches and spotting. The frame retains traces of original nickel plated finish all in protected areas, the balance has flaked and is now a mottled gray patina bright along some of the high edges with some scratches and scattered shallow pin prick pitting. The cylinder is a mottled dark patina with some original nickel remaining. The cylinder scene is still clearly visible. The trigger guard retains much of its original nickel plated finish with patches of flaking. The grips are good showing pressure marks and scuffs. There is a "JK" carved into the left grip stock and there is a chip on the right toe which was worn flush to the rest of the grip. The grips have had an additional coat of varnish applied during period of usage. All markings are clear. Mechanically sound. A rare and highly desirable pistol in very good condition.
