Description:

Original first issue Navy Luger are very scarce as most were destroyed or at least reworked after WWI. This is an example of a first issue altered Navy Luger with the characteristic Navy six-inch barrel, two-position rear sight, grip safety (missing), undated chamber area, and wooden base Navy magazine with concentric circles on the side. The right side of the barrel extension is correctly unmarked with the left side bearing a small crown proof along side a double Crown over "M" Naval proof. The underside of the barrel also has the correct Crown over "M" Naval proofs and the left side has the small Crown proof. The top of the chamber area is unmarked and the rear toggle has the DWM markings. Since this pistol is a first model altered it has a mid production serial number with the altered safety markings of "GESICHERT" in the upper position, with the lower area being slightly milled out, but the word GEISCHERT still partially visible. The extractor is correctly marked "GELADEN" on the left side. The partial serial number "18" is correctly stamped on all the parts except the magazine, side plate and the two grip panels (which have all been renumbered) with the full serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel and front of the frame. The rear grip strap is marked "W.D./233", which is a fairly scarce unit marking for the dockyard at Danzig. It has the original arsenal reworked rust blue finish with the straw colored trigger, magazine release, safety lever, take down lever and ejector.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal reworked and subsequently modified with approximately 90% plus of the rust blued finish remaining with wear on the edges and high spots, slight thinning on the rear grip strap with some slight minor pin-prick pitting on the left front frame rail and along the frame rail on the right side. The undersized grips have been lightly re-checkered on the left side with a few minor handling marks on the right side. There is 50% of the straw color remaining and the rear grip safety has been removed and a second notch has been filed on the stock lug. Even with the listed problems, this is still a solid example of a 1906 First Issue Altered Navy Luger.
