These rifles were the answer to the Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle and although they never attained the same status as the Winchester rifles, some consider them to be a better and stronger than the Winchester rifles. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED.OCT. 11. 1887, APRIL 2. 1889, AUGUST 1. 1893" and the left side is marked "SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL" . The top of the receiver is marked in script "MARLIN SAFETY" and the upper tang is marked "MODEL / 1895". It is equipped with a German silver blade front and adjustable sporting rear sights, standard full length magazine tube and smooth forearm with a straight grip stock and crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth plum patina with strong traces of the original blue finish in protected areas. The receiver, hammer and buttplate have a smooth mottled gray patina and the lever has a smooth mottled brown patina. The wood is very good. The stock is reoiled with a couple of small minor gouges and dents. The forearm has a pleasant hand rubbed patina showing a few small gouges and some minor dents and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is very good.
