Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trap Door" this rifle is a post Civil War alteration of Springfield Model 1863 Rifle-Musket for the .50 caliber center fire cartridge. The rifle is finished "National Armory Bright" and has an oil finished black walnut stock. This particular rifle is the shorter barrel variation with two barrel bands. The lock plate is dated "1862" behind the hammer and is marked with the eagle and shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" in front of it. The top of the breechblock is dated "1866" and stamped with an Eagle Head. The left rear barrel flat is marked with the eagle head. There are no visible cartouches and the left stock flat is stamped with a large "5 4". The heel of the buttplate is marked "US". Sling swivel mounted on the front band and on the front of the trigger guard and the correct ram rod with the knurled and slotted head. Complete with a brown leather sling and correct "US" marked socket bayonet with leather scabbard with brass tip. The hanger has a three line stamping, the last line appears to be "ENFIELD", first two lines unreadable.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a smooth brownish patina and the remaining surfaces have a smooth dark patina. The stock is very good with a few overall scattered minor dings and dents. The sling is about good showing some heavy wear and cracking. The markings are readable. The action is fine. The bayonet is very good with a brownish patina. The scabbard is good with some age cracking and tight stitching and rivets.
