The receiver is marked "U.S./ MODEL 1898, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" followed by the serial number that correctly falls into the Model 1898 carbine serial range (125,000-135,000). Roughly 5,000 were manufactured in 1898 and 1899. It has a pinned fixed blade front sight, and tangent rear sight that is graduated to 2000 yards and marked "C". The carbine has the original short forearm type stock with sling ring bar with ring mounted on the left side and the hand guard without the hump. The buttplate has a trapdoor. The left side of the wrist is stamped with a clear "JSA / 1898" script cartouche and a circled "P" proof in the grip area.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel retains approximately 40% faded original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The action has a smooth gray patina with flashes of original blue on the extractor. The barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate have a mixed brown patina. The stock is very fine with some minor dings and scratches, with clear and crisp markings. All markings are clear and crisp. The action is fine. These rare U.S. Model 1898 Krag SRC'S are absent in many U.S. military collections and this is a solid example!
