Description:

The Type 44 carbine was designed in 1911 specifically for cavalry use. "4/4/ Type" is marked in Kanji on the chamber just below the untouched Imperial Mum. The receiver is also marked with the serial number and the symbol of the Kokura Arsenal. Fixed front and folding elevator rear sights with the fixed curved guard and 13 1/2" triangular spike bayonet. The mounting hardware for the bayonet is numbered to match the rifle and secured with two screws. Matching numbers also present on the bolt and floor plate. Smooth pistol grip stock, with sling swivels, brown leather sling, stampings on the underside of the trigger guard, and a flat butt with small storage compartment. According to a letter provided by the consignor, this carbine was taken as a trophy by C.O. Davis, who participated in the Battle of Okinawa as a Technical Sergeant in the 301st Engineers. While sleeping in his foxhole one evening in May of 1945, a Japanese Lieutenant infiltrated the American lines and stabbed the Sergeant in the back with the bayonet of this carbine, inflicting a painful wound but narrowly missing his spine and kidneys. The Lieutenant's luck ran out, as a nearby Corporal, roused by the struggle, opened fire with a Thompson SMG and ended the fight. After 2 weeks on bed rest, Sergeant Davis returned to his unit, and was given the carbine and a ring taken from the Lieutenant by the Corporal.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the high polish blue. A few mild handling marks are visible overall and some protective varnish is present, strongest in the protected areas. The stock is good, with heavy pressure dents, dings and scuffs overall. Mechanically excellent.
