Description:

Wilhelm II, whose full title is 166 words long, came into power in 1888, and would be the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, abdicating the throne and going into exile at the close of the First World War. Otto Rohloff, a Berlin sculptor active in the late 1800's, is known to have done work for Wilhelm, including furniture and presentation pieces. The statue measures 12 3/4" tall and 15 3/4" long, full silver construction, depicting the Kaiser on horseback, decked out with full military regalia, coat thrown over his left shoulder, sword drawn and held low in the right hand. While most photographs of Wilhelm have him concealing his left hand, which was deformed and withered since childbirth, his hand is depicted as healthy and proportional in size, holding the reigns of the horse. The level of detail is excellent, down to the texture of the clothing and horse blanket, equipment mostly concealed by the coat, rope embroidery, the nails in the horseshoe on the raised leg, down to individual veins on the horse's leg and the Kaiser's mustache. On the backside of the statue is the signature "O. Rohloff Caseleur Berlin", with "E. Borne C./ 1894" on top of the textured base. Mounted on a mahogany plinth, measuring 16" long and 9 7/8" wide, with silver border inlay on the sides with oval accents on the long sides, silver covered corners and edgework with pebbled background and raised scroll and leaf designs, and capping each end is a 3-dimensional rendering of the Imperial seal, with the spread winged eagle in enamel surrounded by a silver leaf pattern frame capped with the silver crown. On the underside of the statue is a pair of paper labels from the Great German Art Exhibition.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with the silver showing a fine aged patina, darkest in the lower areas, giving an attractive contrast and enhancing an already impressive work of art. The plinth shows a few cracks and areas of loose silver. This piece would make a fine addition to any collection of art, and is a true masterwork.
