Description:

The Berdan Sharpshooters were formed by Hiram Berdan in July 1861. Eventually two regiments, the 1st regiment United States sharpshooter (USSS) commanded by Colonel Hiram Berdan and the 2nd regiment USSS commanded by colonel Henry A. Post, were formed. By the end of the war, these regiments were involved in a total of 65 actions and battles, distinguishing themselves at South Mountain, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and were used for skirmishes, picket duty and sniping. This bronze created by sculptor D. Pizzini commemorates the Berdan Sharpshooter and is 1 of 25. The statue depicts a 2nd United States Sharpshooter with a Sharps rifle in his hand (approximately 23" tall and 17" wide). The base is marked "D. Pizzini / 4/06 #1/25". Sculptor Denny Pizzini is best known for his WWII nose art inspired pin-up girl sculptures known as Dennydolls, drawing his inspiration from his first hand experience painting popular pin-up girls onto U.S. Convair B-36 Peacemaker bombers during the Cold War.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with a fine bronze patina and limited handling marks.
