Description:

This is one of an estimated 62 Model 1878 Borchardt Hunter's Rifles manufactured in 1878-1881 and has the top of the receiver marked "J.P. LOWER/DENVER COL." for the famed western dealer John Pray Lower (1833-1917) whose "Sportsmen's Depot" in Denver was one of the most popular western gun shops. He found the Model 1878 less desired by his western customers, writing to Sharps asking them to "send no more of the hammerless guns. Only the old models will sell." Thus, Lower marked Model 1878s are very scarce! The barrel has the caliber designation 40 1 7/8 for .40-70.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall as refinished with some pitting, moderate wear, and a few hairline cracks on stock wrist. Mechanically excellent.
